The countdown to Christmas has officially kicked off in London as thousands of people gather to watch the Oxford Street Christmas lights switch on, reports Emma Parker

The Oxford Street Christmas lights switch on is one of London’s most distinguished festive events, with 1,778 decorations and around 750,000 twinkling LED lights it comes to no surprise why people from all over the world gathered at the event – even in the unpleasant rain and frosty temperature.

As the theme of the year’s display is ‘The Magic of Christmas’, visitors were treated to a range of silver and gold decorations and magical falling snowflakes, all turned on with a push of a button by British singer Rita Ora. She was joined by Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp and Vick Hope, boy band 5 After Midnight and X-Factor 2016 winner Matt Terry.

As the countdown ended and the Christmas lights lit up, the stage blew out a copious amount of steam and spotlights were shining all on the sides of the building which made the enthusiastic crowd roar with cheers and applaud – which made the tradition all the more magical. Onlookers also waited and got treated to a performance from the cast of West End show Five Guys Called Moe.

The capitals busiest and most iconic shopping street teamed up with the NSPCC, with the support of Sky Cinema, to back it’s Light Up Christmas for Children campaign – being the second year running that Oxford Street has teamed up with the children’s charity to host the festive event.

2017 rounds up the 58th year of the Oxford Street Christmas lights switch-on. Previous years have been hosted by a variety of celebrity guests, such as Cheryl in 2014, Kylie Minogue in 2015 and Craig David in 2o16. Now, we only have another year to find out what magical theme is next and what famous icon will do the honours, but lets enjoy this years Christmas first.
