Police figures show another increase in knife crime

Knife crime has reached a record high with 7% increase in offences recorded by police in the
12 months to the end of June 2019.

When the latest figures that came out on Thursday, the number of knives or a sharp
instrument used in crimes increased from 41,000 to just over 44,000.

These knife crime figures do not include Greater Manchester Police since they record the
way they record data differs. Gun crimes have also increased in the last year (in thousands)
with knife crime being 44,076 and gun crime only reaching 6,734.

“As a girl I never really feel safe so I try not to walk alone no matter the time.” Said Yingfei
who is a university student.

Office of National Statistics added “The number of homicides where a knife or sharp
instrument was involved decreased by 14%.”

It is an 80% increase from the low-point in the year ending March 2014 where it was only
23,945 offences.
